Artist Statement

These are scenes primarily from St. Paul during the ICE occupation of the winter of 2026.

The images are things that I observed, by being out with neighbors.  I painted them from photos or memory.

I titled the paintings in the form of questions, as that is how I experienced these anomalous events during those days.

To alleviate the stress of painting these images, I painted wildflowers that grow around Lake Como.

My hope in painting and showing these ICE images is to affirm the collective memory of what happened; that it was real, horrifying and confusing.

While these were my encounters, I know that viewers had their own, large and small. Maybe these images will inspire you to capture or share what you saw, experienced or wondered.
